New Academic Building at Woodsworth College

Woodsworth College is one of seven colleges on the University of Toronto’s St George campus. The new building will expand upon the existing College Halls’ function and importance as a social, academic, event, and student life hub for the Faculty of Arts & Science. Key project considerations include the sensitive approach and integration with the existing structures’ heritage features, an appropriate response to context, as well as sustainable facilities suitable to the professionalism of its’ users.

Programmatically, Woodsworth College fully supports the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources (CIRHR) as well as the Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies (CRIM). Both increasing in size and prominence, new and larger facilities provide the opportunity to house all components of each program under one roof, improving cross-disciplinary synergies, collaboration and administrative efficiencies.

Set within a historic neighbourhood, the new building responds sensitively to its context with a cohesive, high-caliber design that carefully integrates with the current College complex. Program includes a learning commons, student and event space, offices, two new ACE classrooms, foodservices, and a library. Spaces are flexible to allow for reconfiguration over time. Consultations included engagement with University, community, and public stakeholder groups. The new facility is highly sustainable and is designed to meet a projected annual energy consumption performance target at 40% better than Performance Path defined in ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2013, Section 11.
